Notes
T.R.O.M.LIFE is Ismael Sankara's first mixtape, the result of his collaboration with two Gabonese beatmakers and producers, Hokube and Mike Mef. The three met and recorded in Libreville (capital of Gabon) in 2010 after Ismael, in the country to visit his family, missed his flight to Miami. Before his encounter with the two producers, Ismael had intended to call his first album Coming to America after the 1988 comedy movie of the same name. The rapper saw it as a reference to his African origins. Hokube and Mike Mef decided to conceptualize Ismael’s idea in the T.R.O.M.LIFE mixtape. They integrated the idea of a trip from Africa to America within the organization of the tracks: the beginning of the mixtape consists mostly of songs using African samples and rhythms, then the tracks progress to a much more organic feel, integrating modern and American-influenced beats, to mimick the feeling of traveling.
The recording and the making of T.R.O.M.LIFE was documented by independent filmmakers Franck O. Onouviet and Marc Tchicot in a 20-minute short film called "The Rhythm of my Life: Ismael Sankara". The documentary won the Audience Award at the 7th edition of ÉCU (the European Independent Film Festival held in Paris) and received nominations at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the 2012 International Black Film Festival in Nashville, the 2012 San Diego Black Film Festival and the 19th Urban World Film Festival.
