Discussion about The Chemistry Set - Wake Up Sometime!

Oddly enough Wake Up Sometime!, still maintains that bright expected Manchester atmosphere, layered with jangling guitars and straight ahead vocals that travel on the backbeat of the instrumentation … though on this outing the band comes across with a bit harder edge, mixed with an element of blues and an unexpected surf guitar. If anything, Wake Up Sometime!, is a bit of experimental fusion, where each song seems to exist in its own space, and within that space, each song is traveling in a different direction from any other. And while that inconsistency isn’t bad, it does come across as slightly disjointed and jagged, as there is no singular conceptual attitude to carry the listener from the first to the final track.By the time you get to the third number “By This Act Of Judgement,” you will begin to think that you’re home free, with your feet firmly rooted in aspects of their previous release, yet even within that track, Chemistry Set take things down side streets that are filled with store fronts you don’t recognize, yet seem eloquently enticing. For fear of hating myself, I will suggest there there are elements of The Happy Mondays found here, with Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper” lurking in the the sonic harmonics of the background, where you will be brought face to face with things familiar, yet presented with a slightly askew attitude. Though what’s most interesting, is how much this band manages to squeeze into songs that are rather short for the most part.Eventful on the first couple of listens, Wake Up Sometime! is very much in the spirit of the late 80’s and early 90’s, meaning that it does sound dated, and perhaps won’t hold up over time, nevertheless, if you’ve still got a white tee shirt and a pair of baggy jeans, you might just discover a hit of E scrunched into the bottom of a pocket, which would certainly make this a most excellent album without a doubt.Review by Jenell Kesler
